Bronzong Lopunny: the bell nobody heard ringing before Worlds

Bronzong: the piece that buys time for the combo

The engine of this deck is not Dusknoir, and it is not Mega Lopunny ex either. It is Bronzong. Its first attack, Evolution Jammer, costs a single Psychic Energy and deals only 30 damage, but it carries the effect that actually matters: during your opponent's next turn, they can't play any Pokémon from their hand to evolve their Pokémon.

Anyone who follows this space knows I have always had a soft spot for this Bronzong. I took it to the Campinas Regional as a tech inside my own Dragapult, with the idea of using Evolution Jammer to lock the mirror, delaying my opponent on exactly the turns they most need to evolve. I did not do well at the tournament, I finished 3-4-0, but the idea never left my head.

That effect is not generic, it aims squarely at the most popular choices in the current metagame. Looking at the Limitless deck rankings right now, most of the top depends on evolving to function: Dragapult ex, Dragapult Blaziken, Dragapult Dusknoir, Alakazam Dudunsparce and Grimmsnarl Froslass are all among the ten most played decks, and every one of them needs Evolution Pokémon on board to attack for real. And Evolution Jammer does not lock only once: since Bronzong can keep attacking turn after turn, the player can lock for several turns in a row, keeping the opponent stuck on Basic Pokémon or unfinished evolution lines while the rest of the plan comes together.

And it is exactly that bought time the rest of the deck uses to close the game: while the opponent sits there with Basic Pokémon or unfinished evolution lines on the table, Dusknoir's Cursed Blast stamps 130 damage for free on any target, and Mega Lopunny ex's Gale Thrust, an attack that costs a single Colorless Energy, comes off the bench to finish whatever is left. Bronzong does not close the game on its own; it is what guarantees the opponent's board will be vulnerable when the time to close arrives.

And what about the opponent's answers?

No plan survives contact with the opponent without running into resistance, and Bronzong has three classic problems ahead of it.

The first one is Munkidori. Dragapult players commonly use the Mind Bend attack to leave Bronzong Confused as soon as it hits the Active Spot, which means that, when it is time to attack, there is a 50% chance of missing Evolution Jammer and taking 30 damage back on top of it. This is where the Switch count in the list pays for itself: with 4 copies of Switch, plus the access through Poké Pad and the recovery from Night Stretcher, the player can move the Confused Bronzong back to the bench and retreat the new Active, or even use Dusknoir's Cursed Blast Ability to keep pushing the plan without depending on a coin flip, and if Bronzong gets knocked out, set it up again.

The second problem is threats like Fezandipiti ex and Genesect ex: high HP Basic Pokémon that, if left alone, eventually get strong enough to swing the game. The answer here is precisely the Dusknoir count in the list: since Cursed Blast depends on neither Energy nor attacking, the player can use all 4 copies to keep putting 130 damage on those threats as soon as they show up on board, killing them before they even have enough Energy to attack back. Instead of waiting for Fezandipiti or Genesect to build momentum, the deck simply removes the threat while it is still being set up.

The third one is the most direct of them all: Psyduck. Its Ability, Damp, makes every Pokémon in play, on both sides, lose any Ability that requires knocking itself out to be used. In practice, that shuts Cursed Blast off completely for as long as Psyduck is on the table. That is the scenario Flutter Mane is in the list for: the player gathers the pieces in hand (Flutter Mane, Boss's Orders and Dusknoir itself) and uses Boss's Orders to drag Psyduck into the Active Spot. With Flutter Mane in their own Active Spot, the Midnight Fluttering Ability removes every Ability from the opponent's Active Pokémon, including the Damp on the Psyduck that was just dragged up. With Damp off, Cursed Blast works normally again, and the player can clear the opponent's board as if Psyduck had never come into play.

What this changes days before Worlds

Timing is what makes this story interesting. With less than a week to go before San Francisco, most of the community had already made up its mind around Dragapult ex, Mega Excadrill ex and Festival Lead as the three pillars of the format. And it is on top of that assumption that most lists have been polished over the last few days. Bronzong Dusknoir Lopunny does not invalidate that trio, but it exposes a real gap: it is exactly the evolution based decks, the kind of structure that dominates the top of the meta, that suffer the most against Evolution Jammer.

That leaves every player who has yet to lock a list for Worlds facing a real choice. You can adjust the build now, reserving a slot for something like Psyduck itself, or you can simply ignore this information and stick with what you have already been testing. Both decisions are legitimate: not everyone has time to restructure a deck days before the event, and a bad matchup against an archetype with very low share can still be an acceptable risk for someone prioritizing the rest of the metagame.

What you cannot do is pretend the information does not exist. An archetype that was off the radar until last week now has a serious result on the table, and that is the kind of news that spreads fast inside the competitive bubble, except not everyone reads that bubble. Plenty of people will land in San Francisco without knowing this deck exists, with no idea how to play against Evolution Jammer, and they will be caught completely off guard in the first round they sit down at the wrong chair.

Conclusion

Bronzong Dusknoir Lopunny does not need to be the format's next big villain to have already done its job: it showed that the metagame on the eve of a World Championship is never as settled as it looks the week before. It is a deck born from a simple idea: lock evolution and exploit that window. Tested, refined and validated at a real tournament.

Whether it shows up in force in San Francisco or stays restricted to a handful of players willing to take the risk, only Worlds itself will answer. But the warning has been given: anyone who sits down at the table without knowing that this bell is ringing runs the risk of finding out the worst possible way, with their own board blowing up before they realize what happened.
